Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is the largest international airport in Bangladesh which was formerly known worldwide as Zia International Airport and Dacca International Airport. HSI Airport is located in Dhaka, some 20 km away from the main Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh. The airport started its operation in 1980 taking over as the only international airport from Tejgaon Airport. This airport has an area of 1981 acres (approx. 802 ha) and handles more than 65% of the arrival and departure flights both in international and domestic sector.
The airport accommodates around 4 million international passengers and 2 million domestic passengers every year. It has the capacity to facilitate the movement of 8 million passengers per year which is predicted adequate until 2026 by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, the apex body regulating the aviation sector of Bangladesh. In addition to passengers, the airport facilitates around 150,000 tons of freight and mail through it each year.
At present, 5 national airline operators and 21 international airline operators are functional at the airport connecting Bangladesh to 34 cities of 19 countries including domestic and international routes. The airport is also the home base and hub of all 5 Bangladeshi airlines including Biman Bangladesh Airlines, United Airways, Regent Airways, Novo air and US-Bangla Airlines.
Terminals
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport consists of three terminals at present, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 for international flights and the third terminal which is known as the Domestic Terminal for domestic flights. The arrival terminal is at the ground floor of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 while the first floor has the Departure terminal. A special VIP terminal which is around 200 m away from the main gate is specially used by dignitaries and foreign & national delegates.
